THE COUNTDOWN TO DESTRUCTION

Here are some still images from "Attack Plan."

" I tried to approach the film the same way i approach my paintings.  I didn't want a clean crisp image. I wanted it to be a little blurry. I wanted to degrade the image a bit. So I added layers of television static and random images that appeared on the television as i flipped through the channels. I wanted this abstract chaos to overlap the footage of me working in my studio. I liked the idea of making a moving image that was similar to the way i made a painting. I have some ideas for some short films that i want to explore. They would be really abstract. "

MORE DESTRUCTION METHOD NEWS. . . .

HERE IS THE OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE FOR "DESTRUCTION METHOD." Exhibition: Destruction Method: New and Recent Works by Dustin Parker
Reception Date: Final Friday, April 29th, 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. (ONE DAY ONLY EVENT)
Admission is FREE

"Destruction Method," an exhibition featuring a collection of new and recent paintings and computer generated digital prints by Wichita Artist Dustin Parker will be shown at CityArts on April 29th, 2005. "Destruction Method" will be Parker's seventh solo exhibition since he began exhibiting his work in 2000. in 2003 Parker was awarded the Wichita Sedgwick County Arts and Humanities Council Art Award for Individual Artist of the year.

A public reception will be held on Final Friday, April 29th, 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. The show will be a one day only event.

The title of the exhibit was inspired by a quote by the artist Pablo Picasso, "Every Act of Creation is First An Act of Destruction." "When I first read this quote by Picasso I felt like I had discovered my mantra," Said Parker. "It is the condensed version of my creative philosophy. My painting is becoming increasingly less about subject matter and more about paint and the process of constructing and deconstructing an image. I'm more interested in adding and subtracting pigment from the surface. I use everything from electric belt sanders to metal combs to remove paint from the surface. I'm gradually moving toward abstraction. My imagery is still representational but I'm abstracting the images by distressing the image. I'm fascinated with the process of painstakingly building an image only to destroy it."

The exhibition will also feature the debut of "Attack Plan" a 20 minute short film documenting Parker working in his home studio. The film features an original score composed by Arran Lowe. "I've always wanted to incorporate video into my shows," Said Parker "But I've never had the time or resources to pull it off successfully until now. This film will give the audience a behind the scenes look at what I do in the studio. They will see the method behind the madness. The film focuses on a portrait of Picasso I painted for the show. The film shows how this painting evolved from start to finish."

The exhibition also features a collection of new computer generated prints. "I make my living as a graphic designer and as I become more comfortable with that role I find myself mixing what I do on the computer with what I do with my paintings. When I first started creating digital images I wanted to avoid using found images. I wanted to create everything from scratch and build it like I would a painting. I wanted to create the illusion of a painting. But I've recently started to embrace more of a pop art approach to my digital images. I've started to incorporate found images much in the same way that Robert Rauschenberg or Andy Warhol would use found images in their work."

This film will give people a behind the scenes look at what i do in the studio. They will see the method behind the madness. I've been shooting hours of video and taking digital photos of the work as it progresses.  I want to show that evolution. And it has also been interesting to do a little time travel."
