TAG TEAM

Dustin Parker will be one of the featured artists in the Hand to Hand exhibition at The Tangent Lab Gallery. Parker collaborated with Katie Sykes, to create a mixed media collage titled "Fancy Ladies Kill with Cake."

This month Tangent Lab will be hosting a national traveling exhibit titled Hand to Hand: the coast to coast collaborative collage of Rebecca Trawick and David Wallace. The artworks featured in the show are a result of mailing work-in-progress collage pieces back and forth between David Wallace of Pittsburgh, PA and Rebecca Trawick of Los Angeles, CA. Some of the works were completed after only a few exchanges while others changed hands as many as 8 times. This process continued until they agreed a work of art was complete. Each stage of the process was documented and thumbnails of the various iterations of the work will be displayed along with the art so that viewers can see how each collage evolved.

Local artists will also be exhibiting collaborative works in conjunction with the show, including:

Adam, Sarah and Marc Bosworth
Mande Braden and Landon Taylor
Spike Hemans and Katie Hinsey
Matt Hillyard and Valerie Haring
Jaki McElroy and Patrick Fallier
Tina and Dave Murano

Statement from Dustin Parker

"Brad Ruder, the owner and curator of Tangent Lab, asked Katie and I to contribute a collaborative piece to the exhibition and after several failed experiments we finally came up with something that was interesting enough to put on the gallery wall. We originally started by working in the darkroom and tried to combine Katie's photographic imagery with some of my digital imagery and it just didn't work at all. There were some technical issues we didn't expect. The experiment produced some interesting results but nothing that we considered exhibition quality. But some of those pieces might be recycled and used in other pieces. The bits and pieces that worked will probably find new life in a future collage or something of that nature. We ended up doing an abstract painting / collage using many of Katie's old photographs. Katie has been doing these really beautiful photo collages and I've been playing around with abstraction so it seemed like a natural fit to mix those two things. I'm pretty happy with the end result. It came together very quickly and effortlessly. It was nice to do a collaborative that was truly a tag team affair. In the past we've done collaborations in which I digitally manipulated a selection of Katie's photographs but she had very little input in that whole process. With this particular piece we really tried to give each other equal say in the creative process."

PARKER FEATURED IN LOGO LOUNGE 4

The Dark Scientists logo designed by Dustin Parker is featued in Logo Lounge 4.

"The Monkey logo was created for a fictional government agency or shadow organization that conducts experiments with sounds and images, among other things. This imaginary shadow organization acted as the inspiration behind a two man exhibition of paint, sound, and video with my good friend and long time collaborator Arran Lowe. We took on the persona of The Dark Scientists and created art that was inspired by subjects such as animal testing, alien invasions, mind control, nazi vampires, human cloning, shadow people, evolution, nuclear war and all sorts of crazy conspiracy type stuff.

I'm really glad to see the logo get some notice and it is a great honor to be part of such an amazing publication. I've been a big fan of the logo lounge series and its fun to see my work among such incredible talents."
